Credit/debit card security online

Using your credit or debit card to make purchases via this site is a secure way to pay for your booking. The Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA) has put a number of security steps in place to give you confidence when booking on-line.

The communication of all sensitive information, including personal details and credit/debit card information, is encrypted through the use of our secure server software (SSL). This means that information can only be exchanged between you and SYHA, and that no third party can access this data whilst it is being sent over the internet.

All booking details are then held on a secure computer. We do not retain live records of credit/debit card information on our internet web servers after the transaction has been completed.

We will only use the information that we collect about you lawfully and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Information Stored

The following details are collected during the on-line booking process:

1. name
2. address
3. nationality
4. telephone, fax & mobile numbers
5. e-mail address
6. credit/debit card details

You may check that the information we hold about you is accurate and up-to-date by contacting us at any time. If you find anything is inaccurate we will delete or amend the error promptly. We will never collect sensitive information about you without your explicit consent.

Apart from the purpose of making an international booking, if relevant, we will always obtain your consent before transferring your information outside the European Economic Area.

Furthermore, as required by the UK Data Protection Acts of 1984 and 1998, we follow strict security procedures in the storage and disclosure of information which you have given us, to prevent unauthorised access. Our security procedures mean that we may occasionally request proof of identity before we are able to disclose sensitive information to you.

The information submitted for on-line hostel bookings will not be passed to any third parties and will not be used to send you junk e-mails relating to our own or associated services. We may, however, require to e-mail you in the future for the purposes of managing your booking(s).

SYHA offers an optional news e-mail subscription service at http://www.syha.org.uk

We use technology to trace the patterns of behaviour of visitors to our site and we use "cookies" and similar methods that will store, with your express consent, your contact information on your local system. You can use the features on this site without using cookies by making appropriate software configuration changes at your end.

Disclosure to third parties

SYHA does not sell, trade or rent your personal information to others. SYHA may provide aggregate statistics about our customers, sales, traffic patterns, and related site information to reputable third-party vendors, but these statistics will include no personally identifying information.

We never disclose information about a member or guest to any other person or organisation without your consent unless there is an emergency situation that requires it or we are legally required to do so.
